INTRODUCTION TO LEXICOLOGY

Well, welcome back in my blog and in this time we are talking about lexicology. Check this out!!

Lexicology as a branch of linguistics. Its interrelations with other sciences. Lexicology (from Gr lexis “word” and logos “learning”) is a part of linguistics dealing with the vocabulary of a language and the properties of words as the main units of the language. It also studies all kinds of semantic grouping and semantic relations: synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy, semantic fields, etc.
In this connection, the term vocabulary is used to denote a system formed by the sum total of all the words and word equivalents that the language possesses. The term word denotes the basic unit of a given language resulting from the association of a particular meaning with a particular group of sounds capable of a particular grammatical employment. A word therefore is at the same time a semantic, grammatical and phonological unit. So, the subject-matter of lexicology is the word, its morphemic structure, history and meaning.

   DEFINITION OF LEXICOLOGY

  1.  The study of the history and structure of the vocabulary of languange.
  2.   The branch of linguistics that studies the lexical component  of languange.
  3. The branch of linguistics teach about meaning of the word the dictionary.  
     
     GENERAL LEXICOLOGY AND SPECIAL LEXICOLOGY
     
     

     • 1.General lexicology is concerned with the study of vocabulary irrespective of the specific features of any particular language.
     • 2.Special lexicology is the lexicology of a particular language (Azerbaijani, English, Russian, German, French, etc.). It is based on the principals of general lexicology and laid down by general lexicology of vocabulary.

     EXAMPLE 1.SEE(Melihat,Mengerti)=I can SEE your smile,I SEE. 2.LINE(Garis,Barisan)=LINE police,make a LINE.   3.DARE(Berani,Menantang)=I DARE catch my dream,I DARE you to say i love you to heart. 
      
     According to the theorotical basis of the vocabularies of different languages there are three types of them:1.Historical lexicology  deals with the historic change of words in the course of language development. 2.Descriptive lexicology deals with the vocabulary of a given language at a period of time. 3.Contrastive lexicology  studies languages from the point of view of their identity and differentation. 
     
     Lexicology is closely connected with other branch of linguistics:
     The history of the language
     Phonetics
     Stylistics
     Grammar  
     Sociolinguistics  
     Paralinguistics and others
